The Arrieta bridge has dawned this Thursday with a huge sign against the campsite that the Island Plan foresees authorizing on La Garita beach and against which some residents have already begun to mobilize. In fact, in addition to that sign, they have placed signs in other parts of the town and are also sharing a message of rejection via Whatsapp.
"No to the private campsite of La Garita", they title that message, in which they affirm that the Island Plan "contemplates the construction of a private campsite of 55,000 square meters that would occupy the first line of the beach", authorizing the installation of caravans. "To give us an idea of the dimension of the project, it is as much as building a football stadium there as far as the sea reaches", they add.
In that text, they remember that in view of the installation of other camping areas, as happened in Papagayo, "they have always taken into account that no visual impact is generated". However, they maintain that this "does not happen in Arrieta" and that "they do not seem to care". In addition, they point out that "when the Cabildo proposed to install it in Órzola, the campers refused because it was projected far from the sea and finally it was not done".
Now, they denounce that "the first line of the beach is handed over to speculation, sacrificing the interests not only of Haría but of the entire island of Lanzarote, and all for a handful of votes." "Let's not allow such an urbanistic aberration to be consumed", they demand at the end of the message, asking that it be shared.
The mayor says that "there is no need to worry"
The discomfort in Arrieta began weeks ago, as the PSOE councilor in Haría, Alfredo Villalba, pointed out at the beginning of August, who already stated that the residents were beginning to mobilize after learning the content of the PIOT. For his part, the mayor then stated that "alarm" was being generated by something that "is not even possible yet".
"The PIOT Advance contemplates several camping areas or possible camping areas on the island and one option could be on La Garita beach. Another thing is that the municipal planning contemplates it and develops it", Marci Acuña pointed out then, who assured that it will not be done if there is neighborhood opposition.
However, he also pointed out that the City Council does not plan to present allegations to the Island Plan document until the document is not initially approved. "It will be necessary to study it, see the impacts it has, the interest it may have and the impact it would have", indicated Acuña, who believes that now we are "in such an initial phase" that "there is no need to worry".
