The Arrecife City Council will approve a new line of social aid aimed at families with fewer economic resources, which aims to "stop evictions and allow people to continue residing in the same rented homes."
The mayoress of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, has announced that after the approval of the municipal budgets for 2021 - which have already come into effect this Friday with their publication in the BOP - social aid will be increased for families residing in the municipality of Arrecife who are in a vulnerable situation.
One of these new aids, given the economic situation on the island due to the pandemic, will allow families in vulnerable situations and facing eviction due to non-payment of rent for the home where they are residing to receive financial aid equivalent to up to 6 months of rent.
With this measure, which will go to the plenary session to be held next Friday, April 30, the Arrecife City Council hopes that "many families with economic difficulties and in a vulnerable situation can stop evictions and face pending rents."
Modification of the Social Aid Ordinances
The administrative route that the Arrecife City Council will use to approve these aids focuses on the modification of the Regulatory Ordinances of Social Aid of the Social Services, which dates back to 2008.
The spokesperson for the PP and councilor for Social Services, Immigration and Equality of the City Council, María Jesús Tovar, has detailed that "the social reality in Lanzarote, the Canary Islands and Spain is very different in this year 2021, where many families - who until now did not know the situation of vulnerability - require social aid to rebuild their lives and get ahead."
"The Government group has prioritized Social Services and investment for job creation," defends Tovar Pérez, who affirms that for this reason "social policies have been reinforced for this 2021 with more than 4 million euros, an amount previously unknown for Social Services in the capital of Lanzarote."
The councilor has remarked that the aid, of up to six months - currently the ordinances only allow 3 monthly rent payments - will be granted after the final approval of the new ordinances after their public display, final approval and publication in the BOP.
With the agreement of next Friday - whose document has already been favorably audited by the City Council Intervention -, the approval of the new ordinance will proceed. After that plenary session, it will be submitted to the initial procedure of public display and final publication in the BOP.
