The Arrecife City Council has approved this Friday in plenary session the motion presented by the Popular Party Group to "urge the Government of Spain to immediately review, as a matter of urgency, Organic Law 10/2022, of September 6, so that those who commit sexual crimes can have, as soon as possible, the same penalties that were in force until September 2022", says the mayoress of the capital city, Astrid Pérez.
Pérez has stated that "we do not want to see any more rapists on the street and with the entry into force of the "only yes is yes" Law we are facing a very serious situation that affects especially women and minors and, therefore, from the Popular Party we believe that it has to be reviewed as a matter of urgency to prevent the penalties for the crime of rape from being reduced, situations that we are already beginning to see in the Canary Islands".
This motion of the PP Group has had the support of CC, NC and Somos, and with the vote against of the PSOE and the non-attached councilor, Carlos Alberto Alférez, as well as with the abstention of Lanzarote en Pie Sí Podemos and the non-attached councilor, Esther Gómez.
It should be noted that "there are more than 200 people convicted of sexual crimes and twenty people released from prison who have seen their sentences reduced by the entry into force of this law of sexual freedom. A Law that has led to a downward revision of the sentences of many convicted of sexual crimes, by virtue of the retroactive application of the rule most favorable to the defendant", conclude from the Consistory.
