The Agustín de la Hoz House of Culture was the setting chosen for the presentation of the project that will create the Arrecife Popular University, the first on the island. This social initiative aims to include a wide range of courses and workshops with which it is intended to bring training closer to citizens. Those interested in teaching the courses must submit the projects to the Canary Association of Popular Universities.
The event was attended by the president of the ACUP and mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco Antonio González Mesa, the manager of the ACUP, Jose Luis Sarmiento, and the first deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, Festivities and Local Police, José Alfredo Mendoza. "From now on, the population of the municipality can access greater training and cultural development with the activities that we will launch from the new Arrecife Popular University," said the mayor of Arrecife, Ástrid Pérez.
The first mayor highlighted that "Arrecife, from now on, is integrated into the Canary Association of Popular Universities (ACUP) with a cultural and social development project in the regional, island and local scope." "The Arrecife City Council, with this association, will promote social participation and continuous and permanent education to improve the quality of life of citizens through intervention programs, global and specific, aimed, among others, at young people, women, the elderly, children or migrants, among other groups," he added.

Ástrid Pérez highlighted that "the Canary Association of Popular Universities and its Popular Universities carry out more than 400 courses and workshops on permanent training and citizen participation annually, thus responding to the needs of the citizens of our scope of action, with more than 8,000 direct participants passing through their classrooms in 2019."
Uniting several generations and bringing courses closer to the neighborhoods
For his part, the first deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, José Alfredo Mendoza, highlighted that "this great social initiative aims to unite several generations in a place as idyllic as the Civic Center and bring the different courses and workshops closer to the neighborhoods so that the residents of Arrecife have greater accessibility to this project."
The Arrecife Popular University aims to offer courses and workshops of all kinds, from theater, music, dance, literature, writing, etc.... To teach a discipline, those who want to be instructors must submit their projects and meet a series of requirements imposed by the ACUP, which are the same for all of the Canary Islands.
