The public of Yaiza was able to enjoy a novelty on Sunday within the framework of the Los Remedios festivities and also of the activities in Lanzarote: a horse race on asphalt. The event took place on the town's main avenue and aroused "so much curiosity that the spectators were left wanting more", according to the City Council.
The victory in the 1,000-meter duel between two English thoroughbred horses went to the specimen Appeal To Reason, ridden by jockey Seidán Moreno, surpassing the mare Cheeki Face, ridden by Jonatan Fuentes from Majorera, by four or five lengths.
Seidán Moreno (23 years old), a resident of El Golfo, has been passionate about horse racing since he started competing eight years ago. In Yaiza he cried with happiness for having won on his Island, in his municipality. Even without crossing the finish line and with the peace of mind of having his rival under control, he looked to the sky to dedicate the triumph to a deceased friend.
Seidán Moreno got rid of the thorn in the first race, starring crossbred horses over a distance of 1,000 meters, where he was surpassed by Jonatan Fuentes riding Plateado. On this occasion, Seidán rode the mare Kalessi from the Artenara stable in Las Palmas, also the owner of the winning thoroughbred. For their part, the two horses ridden by Jonatan Fuentes are from the Trujillo stable in Tenerife.
The spectators found the entire ritual involved in preparing the horses striking, with bandages and so on, the warming up of the animals and riders in the Plaza de La Alameda and the parade along the entire central avenue of Yaiza to the starting line. The City Council has pointed out that the speedometer of the ambulance that followed the horses at a distance marked more than 70 kilometers per hour, which gives an idea of how fast these animals are.
"The horses start competing at the racetrack and then train on asphalt with a period of adaptation," explained jockey Seidán Moreno, during the awards ceremony, presided over in the Plaza de Yaiza by the Councilor for Festivities, Javier Camacho.
