The Civil Guard evicted two elderly women yesterday morning who had been living for more than forty years in two houses located on Tenerife Street in Puerto del Carmen. According to the youngest son of one of the ladies, Juan Francisco Hernández, "tomorrow (for today) they will begin to build a new building on the site where my mother and the other family live."

70 civil guards

Around ten in the morning, members of the security forces approached the place. In this way, about 70 civil guards and several local police officers went to the site to proceed with the eviction. First they went to the house of Manuela, a 72-year-old widow. With the aim of getting the old woman out without the intervention of the special group that was in the area, several members of the Civil Guard spent a good part of the morning negotiating with her and her relatives.

Finally, at one ten in the afternoon, she left crying from what until now has been her home for more than four decades accompanied by a Civil Guard who took her to a car. "For the moment they are taking her to an apartment that the City Council will pay for and then they will look for a house for her that the city council will also pay for," explained Juan Francisco Hernández.

Next, the members of the Civil Guard moved to the neighboring house of Carmen Acosta where the family proceeded to remove all the objects from the house that they abandoned in the afternoon. In this case, the woman will be able to move to a home that her family has.

Cause

To proceed with the eviction, the owners of the houses have a ruling from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. Thus, it seems that today a new construction will be carried out on the site where the two houses are located.

Faced with the situation, a large number of neighbors approached the place to show their support for the two neighbors.

Thus, shouts were heard in favor of the two women who have been living in the area for a large number of years and who are now without the home where they have spent a good part of their lives.
