The Tourist Centers have invited the population of Lanzarote to participate in the creation of a public digital archive, which can be consulted by clicking on this link, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of its creation. This past summer, the popular campaign "Fifty years together. Leave us your memory of the Centers" was carried out and, for the moment, the Digital Memory of Lanzarote website houses more than 800 documents, many of them unpublished.

During these months, more than 650 images have been converted to electronic format, highlighting some prior to the interventions promoted by the Cabildo de Lanzarote and which transformed these spaces into the Tourist Centers from 1964. In this way, you can see what the old Timanfaya picnic area or the Guatiza mill was like, in addition to the works in Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río, among others.

It is also possible to consult images of relevant figures in the history of Lanzarote, as well as acts of great cultural, political or social relevance since the 60s. With the campaign "Fifty years together. Leave us your memory of the Centers" abundant donations have been achieved from family collections and also from archives such as that of Larry and Liz Yaskiel, English residents on the island since the 70s, whose images show a multitude of international visitors in the Centers.

Citizen collaboration

In the coming months, the tasks of disseminating this digital archive will be intensified and the records related to fields for which there is still not so much material will be increased: films or videos, audios and historical data. The ultimate goal is to create a documentary collection that is useful for both researchers and the general public.

This initiative also seeks to highlight the historical "social function" of the Tourist Centers, as well as "their category as maximum symbols in the creation of a new cultural identity linked to the landscape and tourism." From the Centers and also from the Data Center, they request the participation of all those people who keep any type of document about the Centers.

The original material provided will be digitized in the shortest possible period of time along with a copy in digital format for the donors as a gesture for having collaborated with Memoria Digital de Lanzarote. Those interested can call 928 810100 (extension 3006).
