THE NUMBER OF INHABITANTS HAS GROWN BY 1,445 PEOPLE COMPARED TO 2017

The total population of Lanzarote increases by almost 1% while the population over 65 years increases by 9%

At the beginning of 2018, there are 148,468 inhabitants in Lanzarote, of which 17,941 are over 65 years old, which represents 12% of the total population of the island

The population of Lanzarote has grown by nearly 1% in the last year, while the number of residents over 65 years has grown by 9%, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics published by the Data Center of the Cabildo. 

Specifically, at the beginning of 2018 there are 148,468 inhabitants in Lanzarote compared to the 147,023 there were on January 1 of last year, meaning that the island's population has increased by 1,445 people. Of these, 17,941 are over 65 years old, while the population over this age in January 2017 was 16,467 inhabitants, so the number of older people has grown by 1,484. The population over 65 also represents 12% of the total inhabitants of Lanzarote. 

As for the other age groups, there are 14,698 between 0 and 9 years old; 16,402 between 10 and 19 years old; 18,137 between 20 and 29 years old; 23,866 between 30 and 39 years old; 27,716 between 40 and 49 years old; 21,971 between 50 and 59 years old; and 7,737 between 60 and 64. 

 

Fewer national residents and more foreigners 


Of the 148,468 inhabitants registered in Lanzarote at the start of 2018, 106,253 were born in Spain, although 114,830 have Spanish nationality, registering a decrease of 282 people (0.2%) since in January 2015 there were 115,112 residents with Spanish nationality on the island.

As for the population with foreign nationality, it amounts to 33,638 people, 1,727 more than last year, or, in other words, 5.4% more.
