The sea salt produced in the Janubio Salt Flats is "free of microplastics". This has been assured by the company, which states that it was subjected to an "exhaustive" analysis "without the test detecting its presence."

According to them, the sample was taken by Laboratorio TRESa, collected on November 11th, the test began that same day and concluded on the 18th. The report concludes that the Lanzarote sea salt product from Salinas de Janubio "does not contain microplastics from the analyzed families (Polypropylene, High-density polyethylene, Low-density polyethylene, PET, Nylon)", it states.

The analysis was commissioned by Salinas de Janubio, SL, the company that produces sea salt by artisanal methods in this space. By proving that Janubio sea salt, as well as its salt flats, are free of plastics, the company points out that it demonstrates its responsibility "to human health, the environment, and the quality of the products it produces within this protected natural space."

Grand Gold Medal of the Canary Islands

Thus, it considers that it is also accredited that the fleur de sel from Salinas de Janubio obtained the Grand Gold Medal of the Canary Islands on November 18th at the II Official Agrocanarias 2019 Sea Salt Competition, in the 'Fleur de Sel' category, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands.

"Since the beginning of this century, plastic fragments, fibers, and granules, known as microplastics, have been considered a new type of pollutant in themselves. These are pieces of less than 5 millimeters that, once released into the environment, can reach humans through their ingestion by different living beings. When microplastics end up in the ocean, they are collected, moved, and decomposed by ocean currents," the company explains.

Located in the municipality of Yaiza, "the Janubio Salt Flats are one of the most important saline wetlands in the world and the most outstanding salt production facility in the Canary Islands, as well as the largest and most interesting in the archipelago," the company points out. This space dates back to the late 19th century "and its relevance lies in the fact that it is a human intervention in the territory closely associated with a traditional economic exploitation," it adds.

In this regard, it is explained that sea salt is collected in sunny weather and the harvest runs from April to October, depending on the weather. The winter season is used for cleaning and maintenance work on cuts and cooking areas. The resulting salt is packaged in the old salt warehouse, converted into the Bodega de la Sal (Salt Cellar), which is the place where the guided tours offered to visitors to these centuries-old salt flats begin and end. In addition, you can purchase the different types of sea salts that are produced in Janubio here.
