The Local Police of Teguise has decided not to work overtime, as a complaint about the situation the body is going through. The lack of materials, complete uniforms and the need to increase the staff are the reasons that have led the police to make this decision, according to Óscar Santos, member of the Independent Trade Union and Civil Servants (CSIF), in the Buenos Días Lanzarote program of Radio Lanzarote - Onda Cero.

Last week the councilor in the opposition for the Popular Party, Jonás Álvarez, denounced the “lamentable” state of the cars of the Local Police of Teguise, some of them even with smooth tires. Something that has been confirmed by Óscar Santos, member of the CSIF, in addition to other irregularities in the body, such as the lack of basic materials for their work. “We have been without the complete provision of the uniform for several years, they only give us loose elements,” says Santos.

In addition, he justifies that working overtime is not something specific, but “quite frequent” due to the current situation, and assures that having enough staff is "very difficult".

This drastic decision was approved almost unanimously last Friday in an assembly with the workers of the body, where there were only two abstentions and the rest voted in favor. In addition, Óscar Santos announces that it is only the first measure, and that they are "willing to advance the pressure measures to be able to reach an agreement with the City Council". He also considers it necessary to have more frequent meetings with the City Council, since they have only had meetings in December 2020, in April and last Friday.

The lack of resources directly affects La Graciosa

The expansion of the staff of the Local Police of Teguise, according to Óscar Santos, has been stalled in the last year. “There is a very slow opposition process, as is the one for officers. This hurts us because we are short of staff,” he criticizes.

This lack of resources greatly affects the island of La Graciosa, which on normal days only has one daytime local police officer, who finishes his working day in the afternoon, so the Graciosa night does not have any police. “In the months of July we try to reinforce La Graciosa, but it is difficult, and most of the time the Civil Guard takes care of it.

Óscar Santos hopes that the promises of the government group, and the meetings with the Councilor for Personnel, Olivia Duque, will bear fruit and an agreement will be reached that facilitates the work of the Local Police. “We are tired of the good faith words of the government group," he says.
