The Association of Mothers and Fathers of Students (AMPA) of the IES Agustín Espinosa has delivered this week some canteens to the winning students of the school contest that promotes the axis of Environmental Education and Sustainability of the educational center.
During the last quarter, we have worked to raise awareness on the use of canteens. We have analyzed the advantages and disadvantages for health and the environment of the habit of single-use bottles. Messages such as "more than eight million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year" or "if you use a canteen you save the planet 167 bottles per person during a school year", have been worked and transmitted through posters and educational videos. Although it may seem strange, the use of canteens is not yet widespread in schools and institutes and there are many children and young people who, to this day, still attend class with plastic bottles.
The winning class, as well as the eco-delegates and the staff dedicated to cleaning the center, received the bottles, sponsored by the association of mothers and fathers of the center that has collaborated with this initiative.
The role of Education in achieving the SDGs
The Agustín Espinosa Secondary School works with the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the United Nations. There are 17 goals that are divided into 169 concrete targets. It is worth mentioning climate change, peace and justice, gender equality, quality education or the end of poverty, among other priorities. Education plays an essential role in the formation of citizenship and in the shaping of our social fabric. For this reason, the inclusion of environmentally sustainable attitudes and behaviors in educational institutions is one of the fundamental lines for UNESCO.
The AMPA of the IES Agustín Espinosa aims to contribute to the work developed by the center that seeks to build a better, fairer and more supportive world, through the SDGs, specifically in this case number 13 "Climate Action".
