Holi, the festival of colors that is commemorated annually in India and Nepal, returned once again to Puerto del Carmen with a celebration carried out on Sunday, March 31, in the Plaza de las Naciones. This festival, which usually coincides with the beginning of spring, stands out for the explosion of colors combined with music, dance and the characteristic gastronomy of the area.
The Plaza de las Naciones was tinged with color from 12:00 to 20:00 hours in a cheerful meeting with the Hindu community of Lanzarote, which included the participation of numerous public, staging of dance schools of different disciplines such as Bollywood, Latin dances and flamenco, foam party and the performance of a young DJ from Tenerife and DJ Desi Jockeys, who came directly from Manchester.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, commented that "the celebration in Puerto del Carmen of the Holi festival has always been for us an opportunity for cultural exchange that favors our pluralistic and multicultural environment. We continue to bet on strengthening our relations with India and we value this excellent connection. I also appreciate the involvement of the Hindu Community of Lanzarote, chaired by Dharmendra Jethani."
The Councilor for Culture, Pepa González, praised the quality of the performances and the festival itself, which included more than a dozen stalls with traditional Indian food. She stressed that this celebration "is based on joy and optimism, on setting aside the bad memories of the past to welcome the present and the future with a big smile that illuminates the faces of the participants."
The festivity is characterized by the exaltation of friendship. During the same, typical food from the Asian country is served and the participants stain their faces and clothes with various colors, according to the City Council of Tías, collaborator of the event.
In addition, the festival featured the performance of five dance academies from Lanzarote: The MTDANCE school, the 'Daniel de la Rosa' school, the 'Anmy Rodríguez School', the 'Hayati' dance studio and the 'Aires del Sur' Flamenco school. The party, in which more than 2,000 attendees participated, was a success.
