The entry of a sub-Saharan air mass since the end of last week in Lanzarote is leaving an unbreathable environment in. The island, which was under yellow alert due to the presence of suspended dust in recent days, continues to suffer the haze also this Monday, although now without alerts.
According to the data collected by the Government of the Canary Islands, all stations that measure air quality on the island, located between Arrecife and Costa Teguise, are collecting this very afternoon values detrimental to the general population, which will have a greater impact on risk groups.
The presence of suspended particles with a diameter smaller than ten microns places the air quality between "unfavorable" and "very unfavorable" indices, which are the third and second worst scenarios. Stations like Arrecife's register a quantity of between 101 and 105 micrograms of particles smaller than ten microns per cubic meter.
The report on air quality in the Spanish State during 2024, published last summer by Ecologistas en Acción, states that the intrusion of particles less than ten microns exceeded 500 micrograms per cubic meter in Lanzarote.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts that the haze will begin to subside from this Monday, although it will not completely leave the island until Wednesday.
