Resounding success. With these words, the course of the conference 'Y ocho. Homage to a small Island' organized by the Sociedad de Cultura, Recreo y Deportes Torrelavega can be defined, which ended last Tuesday with an apotheosic celebration.
The facilities of the Torrelavega Society were once again too small to accommodate all the people who came to the place to see the exhibition, enjoy the conference of Professor Marcos Hormiga Santana.
The young man, born in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura, although he prefers the name of Puerto Cabras), loves literature and has three books published of translation from English to Spanish and five of poetry. His lecture was spoken accompanied by slides that served to complement everything related to David Bannerman's trip to the eighth island.
Thus, attendees had the opportunity to learn about the ornithological expedition to the eastern islands of the scientist who was also in Lanzarote, Montaña Clara and Alegranza. Thus, Marcos Hernández's lecture thrilled an audience that gave him a standing ovation for several minutes.
Heraldic shield of the Society
In addition, the professor, in collaboration with the Torrelavega Society, the Arrecife City Council, the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, had prepared a small book with part of the lecture he presented. Once the lecture was over, he was presented with the heraldic shield of the society that was designed by César Manrique at the time. The person in charge of delivering the figure was the president of the Torrelavega Society, Edmundo de la Hoz.
Next, the closing protocol was initiated. Thus, the first to address the public was Antonio Félix Martín Hormiga, member of the Culture committee of the Torrelavega Society, who reviewed the conference and encouraged people to continue supporting this type of activities. Next, Alfredo Cabrera, Councilor for Culture, Festivities and Tourism of the Teguise City Council, intervened as the administrative entity of La Graciosa. After his speech, he presented the Torrelavega Society with the highest distinction granted by the city council, which consists of the heraldic shield of the municipality made of leather, as well as a collection of books published by the Department of Culture of Teguise.
Next, an emotional Edmundo de la Hoz participated, who thanked the collaboration of all those involved in the organization of these conferences. In addition, he explained that in November they will hold a pictorial exhibition of the Millares family of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria accompanied by a week of cinema.
Concert
After the protocol interventions, the attendees were able to enjoy the concert of Beni Ferrer from Lanzarote. It was an exquisite performance with a voice that the young woman embroidered. Known from other performances, especially in the musical group La Perla, now her voice shines with its own light. In this sense, the polyphony is noticeable, which is an educated voice, its power and its sweetness.
The young woman, accompanied by four excellent musicians and the voices of her sister Mariola, gave a great performance that was too short for all the attendees. She began with some surprising seguidillas with arrangements. Her repertoire continued into the night with prolonged applause. The singer performed boleros, unpublished songs written by her brother and a fado sung in Portuguese that delighted the audience.
Finally, she sang a bolero and the song 'El velero' which she performed very well. After this song, the concert was interrupted, as the president of the Torrelavega Society wanted to present them with bouquets of flowers for their participation. The public was very supportive of them, who closed the performance with the song 'Aguañá' which brought the attendees to their feet.
