The blue flag, a symbol not only of water quality, but of a whole range of facilities, infrastructures and services, arrived last Thursday at Las Cucharas Beach, one of the most recognized in the town of Costa Teguise.

Last Thursday, the mayor of the northern municipality of the Island officiated the raising of that blue flag, although unfortunately the raising became a symbolic act, because the flagpole on the beach was broken. The mayor was accompanied at the ceremony by the Councilor for Public Works, and the president of the Union for the Conservation of Costa Teguise, Rosa Romero Hernández.

This organization is a group of residents and businessmen from the town interested in promoting the sustainable development of the town.

This year it will be the only beach in Teguise with this quality distinction, since the blue flag was only requested for this one, while last year Playa de Bastián also held it.

All services

Las Cucharas has long provided all the services that give the place the quality distinction, from access for the disabled, the quality of the water and the environment, to the mandatory lifeguard service, showers and spa.

The candidacy presented a few months ago by the Teguise City Council in order to obtain said classification for Las Cucharas Beach, in Costa Teguise, obtained this year the approval of the General Directorate of Public Health of the Government of the Canary Islands and is accompanied by the necessary services and infrastructures typical of the areas that display the blue flags of quality.

Teguise PET

The forecasts regarding improvements to the beaches of this town during the coming years are mainly included in various actions of the Teguise Tourism Excellence Plan (PET).

This programming until 2007 includes the upcoming construction of public toilets on Los Charcos Beach and in Jablillo, the installation of new showers in Jablillo, Las Cucharas, Los Charcos, Bastián and El Ancla, as well as the placement of street furniture in all of them. The PET also plans to build pedestrian access in Playa del Ancla.

Emerlan for Famara

On the other hand, as has been done every summer between the months of July and September, the Teguise City Council has contracted the Emerlan service for Famara Beach, where during the summer months the volunteers of this NGO dedicated to lifeguarding and maritime rescue will be present. An ambulance, two quads and a jet ski are part of the technical equipment deployed on the beach in the north of the municipality to cover the needs in the face of the increase in visitors to this charming, but

certainly somewhat dangerous beach.
