Six of the seven former presidents of the Canary Islands gathered this Wednesday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to give their last goodbye to the one who preceded them all, Jerónimo Saavedra, who was the first president of the Autonomous Community, from 1983 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1993.
Lorenzo Olarte (president between 1989 and 1991), Manuel Hermoso (1993-1999), Román Rodríguez (1999-2003), Paulino Rivero (2007-2015), Fernando Clavijo (2015-2019 and again in office since July) and Ángel Víctor Torres (2019-2023) have coincided in the funeral chapel, installed in the consistorial houses of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the moments prior to the transfer of the remains of Jerónimo Saavedra to the Las Palmas Cemetery, in the Vegueta neighborhood.
Only Fernando Fernández, who was president from 1987 to 1989, has been absent from among the autonomous presidents alive, while the eighth, Adán Martín, president from 2003 to 2007, died in 2010.
The stairs of the consistorial houses, where the funeral chapel is installed, are lined with around 150 flower wreaths.
