The Government of the Canary Islands has declared three days of official mourning in the Autonomous Community for the death of former President Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo. From today until next Friday, the flags of all public centers dependent on the Autonomous Community will fly at half-mast.

Jerónimo Saavedra, first president of the Canary Islands (1983-1987 and 1991-1993) and former Minister of Education and Science and Public Administrations, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 87. Born on July 3, 1936, he was also mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Deputy of the Common.

The declaration of three days of official mourning by the Government of the Canary Islands was already adopted on October 10, 2010, after the death in a hospital in Barcelona of former President Adán Martín.

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, will travel this afternoon to the capital of Gran Canaria to attend the wake of Jerónimo Saavedra at the Casas Consistoriales of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council and convey his condolences directly to family and friends.
