The PSOE Canarias has expressed its deep regret for the death of Jerónimo Saavedra, a decisive figure in the political history of the Canary Islands and also of our regional organization, of which he was general secretary for several decades.

The general secretary of the PSOE Canarias, Ángel Víctor Torres, who precisely this Monday had the opportunity to speak with him by telephone following his appointment as minister of the new Government of Spain, has defined him as "companion and teacher", a "crucial reference in the history of Canarian and Spanish politics."

For her part, the Secretary of Organization, Nira Fierro, stressed that "today we would not be what we are" as a political party without the contribution of Jerónimo Saavedra. Therefore, "from the Socialist Party of the Canary Islands we can only have words of gratitude to such a relevant figure for the left in the Canary Islands and for politics in the Canary Islands as Jerónimo Saavedra".

"Today is a sad day for Canarian socialism for the loss of this figure so relevant in regional politics, in national politics, in a stage as complex as the one he had to deal with. Gratitude for his dedication to freedom, for social justice, for the construction of the Socialist Party in the Canary Islands and today we would not be what we are without his contribution, without a doubt," said Nira Fierro.
