In total, 85,160.70 tons of garbage ended up in the Zonzamas Environmental Complex in 2021. The figure represents an increase of 21.8% compared to 2020. This was reported by the Lanzarote Data Center.

The landfill, located between the San Bartolomé and Teguise highway, is the point where all the island's waste ends up.

In order of greatest to least amount of garbage produced, the municipalities would be placed as follows: Arrecife (29%), Tías (18%), Teguise (17%), Yaiza (17%), San Bartolomé (10%), Tinajo (5%) and Haría (4%).

Arrecife concentrates 29% of the tons of waste that end up in Zonzamas and 40% of the island's population. Teguise is close to 15% of the population and 16.9% of the garbage. Tías has 18% of the waste and 13.5% of the population. Yaiza has 10.8% of the population and 16.48% of the waste. Although San Bartolomé has more population than Yaiza, it accounts for 9% of the garbage that ends up in the landfill and 12.16% of the population.

However, the variable amount of population and number of waste are not directly related. From highest to lowest, the island's population is distributed in: Arrecife, Teguise, Tías, San Bartolomé, Yaiza, Tinajo and Haría.

In addition, the municipalities where garbage production increased the most between 2020 and 2021 are Tinajo (63%), Haría (37%), Yaiza (28.7%), Tías (25%), Teguise (22%) and Arrecife (12%).

In addition, people residing in Lanzarote have thrown 9,220.3 tons into recycling containers. The most recycled has been glass (3,940.5), paper and cardboard (3,051.6) followed by containers (2,228.2).
