Science is touched, experimented with and shared at the Miniferia de la Ciencia y la Innovación de Lanzarote 2025, an event already consolidated within the Canary Islands Month and promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI).
This Friday, more than 600 students from Secondary, Baccalaureate and FP from educational centers throughout the island experienced a day of unique scientific immersion: from experimenting with renewable energy storage to designing a sustainable lifestyle, to showing their own projects and learning about the most innovative applications of ICT and virtual reality.
With all the places sold out, the CIFP Zonzamas became a hotbed of talent and scientific curiosity.
The Minister of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín, stressed that “Science is alive in Lanzarote and improves our lives every day. Here we see it directly: from how to take care of our health to how to use energy more sustainably, research and innovation are real tools to improve well-being and build the future of the Canary Islands. Today we celebrate a Miniferia that connects science and life, knowledge and youth."
The Director General of University Planning, Innovation and Quality, Jassary Alvarado Valiño, inaugurated the event on behalf of ACIISI together with representatives of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Arrecife City Council and the host center.
“The Miniferia is already a benchmark in the Canary Islands: a place where science is lived and where young talent is awakened. Here vocations are explored, ideas are shared and generations are connected around knowledge. Science should be as present in our lives as education or health,” Alvarado stressed.
For her part, the Councilor of the Education Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Ascensión Toledo, stressed that the active participation of students in this Miniferia is a sign of how education can and should go hand in hand with innovation. “The involvement of educational centers, the enthusiasm of teachers and the response of students confirm that Lanzarote has enormous potential in the field of knowledge and research,” Toledo said.
Likewise, the Councilor for Education of the Arrecife City Council, Abigaíl González, pointed out that “it is essential that our young people see science and technology as a way to transform reality. We have a commitment to promote educational events that connect young people with the opportunities of the future.”
Living science and active talent
One of the areas with the most activity was the Scientific Gambuesa, which in its tenth edition presented fifteen projects created and defended by exhibiting students from various centers. An experience of “learning by doing” that fosters scientific vocations and creates networks between teachers.
The program also included immersive workshops on ICT and telecommunications engineering, organized by the Canary Islands Association of Telecommunications Engineers, and virtual reality demonstrations with historical, scientific and futuristic scenarios.
In another space, Dronicaespectral showed how drones can detect the energy efficiency of solar panels through thermal images, in a technical workshop organized by Robotdrónica.
Participating students were also able to dialogue with researchers from leading institutions such as the ULPGC, the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), TeideSat, the University Institute of Tropical Diseases of the ULL, and the 3i classroom team.
Beyond a fair, this event demonstrates how science is integrated into daily life and quality education. It is an open door to vocation, the future and innovation in the Canary Islands.
Other activities highlighted throughout the day were the dissemination of ICT and Telecommunications Engineering studies, as well as Virtual Reality as a tool for knowledge. Here, the Canary Islands Association of Telecommunications Engineers presented the different scientific projects carried out by students of the School of Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering (EITE) with important applications to daily life, results of works that inspire and aspire to 'excite' future students with the exciting research task of telecommunications. It also delved into virtual reality not only for fun but also for learning.
Another activity was an immersive experience of traveling in time and interacting in different historical moments and places as interesting as the Notre Dame Cathedral, hallucinating with the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, talking to robots or visiting the city of the future, among other unique spaces.
Dronicaespectral was the activity about drones. A workshop that facilitates the practical and theoretical knowledge of the use of this technology in the multispectral reading of photovoltaic panels, and allows detecting their efficiency through the heat losses produced by the electrical nodes. Talks, workshops, projects and experiments of this Miniferia were given by staff from the ULPGC, the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), Teide Sat (first nanosatellite of Canary Islands universities), the University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health of the Canary Islands of the University of La Laguna (ULL) (IUETSPC-ULL) and classroom 3i, in addition to the teaching staff of educational centers and the entities mentioned above.
