Manuel Hermoso Rojas dies. The Canarian politician Manuel Antonio Hermoso Rojas has died at the age of 89. Born in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on July 24, 1935, Hermoso was one of the most influential figures in the recent history of the Archipelago. Founder of Agrupación Tinerfeña de Independientes (ATI) and later of Coalición Canaria, he left a deep mark both locally and regionally.

He was mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife between 1979 and 1991, and later served as President of the Government of the Canary Islands from 1993 to 1999, being the first leader to accede to the position from a purely Canarian formation.
