The prestigious award, granted annually by the Spanish Red Cross Foundation CREFAT since 1989, is one of the most important national distinctions in action against the problems derived from drug use. As a novelty, the 2007 call pays special attention to the abusive consumption of alcohol and the problems it generates in its environment. The awards consist of two editions, one national and one Ibero-American, and are composed of three modalities: Social Media, Prevention in the Educational and Community field, and Social Work.
Canarias was awarded in the "Social Work" modality, aimed at public or private entities, corporations, associations or companies that are distinguished for their work in promoting social participation in the development of prevention, assistance and social integration projects and programs.
The drug dependency care network in Lanzarote is financed by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council and has a complete therapeutic circuit consisting of a wide variety of centers and programs that allow offering comprehensive care to drug-dependent patients and their families.
This island network that has been awarded is integrated by an Outpatient Unit for Drug Dependency Care (UAD); a Day Center; a Therapeutic Community and a Hospital Unit for Detoxification, all of them complemented with a methadone maintenance program and legal, prevention and reintegration services.
The awarded project, "Normalization in a framework of Drug Dependencies: the challenge of integration", collects detailed information about its history, therapeutic structure, coordination with other resources and projects and plans launched since its inception.
It is the fifth time that a drug dependency care service in the Islands has been awarded with the Queen Sofía Award against Drugs. Other resources awarded in previous editions have been the San Miguel Youth Cooperation Association, in 1991; the Yrichen Social Action Center, in 1997; the Institute for the Study of Addictions (IEA), in 2001 and the Fortaleza de Ansite Therapeutic Community, in 2004.
