The tourist model of the Canary Islands, of large numbers of arrivals, has been in question for some time. In particular, due to its impact on the cost of housing, public services and with salaries, closely linked to tourism, which according to the Quarterly Labor Cost Survey of the National Institute of Statistics, are already the lowest among the autonomous communities.
If it has recently been published that Tenerife receives more tourists each year than Brazil, Lanzarote is not far behind and welcomes more than three million international tourists each year, as many as Peru.
With a population of just over 166,000 people, the island of Lanzarote received 3.4 million tourists last year, according to the Lanzarote Data Center based on the latest Statistics of Tourist Movements at Canary Islands Borders.
Discounting national tourism, the number of international tourists to Lanzarote is 3.11 million
Meanwhile, Peru, with a population of 34.2 million inhabitants, receives each year a number of international tourists very similar to that of Lanzarote, just over three million.
In 2024, the number of arrivals to Lanzarote grew by 7.2% compared to the previous year, while international tourism to Peru grew by 29% to 3.2 million, slightly exceeding the figure for Lanzarote (3.11 million).
With an area of nearly 1.3 million square kilometers, more than double the entire Spanish territory, Peru has an area equivalent to 1,520 times the territory of the island of Lanzarote.
If Peru had to bear the tourist pressure of Lanzarote per resident, the number of international tourists in the Andean country would exceed 640 million tourists.
If Lanzarote is an island full of beautiful places to visit, the tourist possibilities of Peru are immense, it has hundreds of archaeological sites of some of the most prosperous civilizations of antiquity, more than 100,000 sites of interest, the Amazon region, colonial cities, one of the best gastronomies in the world, among other attractions.
