Divorces and separations in Lanzarote registered the lowest value in the last two decades in 2022. In addition, they decreased by 14.4% compared to the previous year. According to data from the General Council of the Judiciary, 291 breakups were recorded last year, the lowest figure in twenty years.
The most common form of legal breakup on the island during 2022 was consensual divorce. In total, 165 consensual divorces and 113 non-consensual divorces were registered. Separations were a minority, 13. The difference between the two cases is that separation does not include the dissolution of the marriage, while divorce does.
In that same year, 21 measures already agreed upon and 98 not agreed upon were modified. In addition, no null marriages were recorded.
Regarding the custody of minors, it was more difficult to agree. Throughout the year, 109 minors were placed under the agreed custody of both parents. Likewise, 136 obtained shared custody in a non-agreed manner. In both cases, data on children of women victims of gender violence are not included.
Lanzarote registered 1,998 agreed divorces and 1,764 non-agreed divorces in the last 10 years.
Regarding the last decade, the census of accumulated data echoed by the Lanzarote Data Center indicates that 2013 (458 divorces and separations), 2012 (424) or 2014 (404) were the years with the highest number of divorces.
Since the law was approved in 2004, the Judicial District of Arrecife recorded a spike in divorces and separations in 2007 (464), 2008 (463) and 2013 (458), the highest spike was recorded.
