The San Bartolomé Plenary approved this Wednesday to initiate the administrative process to change the name of a street in the town, which will now be called "Murga Femenina Las Revoltosas".
From the City Council they explain that this agreement has been adopted "as an honorary title, in order to perpetuate the pioneering work carried out by this group of women who managed to be the first female murga in the Canary Islands, valuing that a group made up of a group of women residents and natives of San Bartolomé, stands unquestionably as an island reference of the Carnival of San Bartolomé, first, and of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands later."
The Murga "Las Revoltosas", established in the early 80s, was later distinguished as the first female afilarmónica of the Canary Islands, in 1997, "marking a milestone in the history, culture and memory of this town", emphasizes the Consistory.
The mayor, Isidro Pérez, emphasizes that this recognition also aims to highlight "the creation of its own female identity, breaking with canons of the social context in which a standard-bearer collective was forged, which today represents female empowerment, the breaking of the precepts of the time and the projection of cultural creativity as a legacy for new generations."
"We understand that they have sufficient merit to have an impact on the social and cultural enhancement of San Bartolomé, for their indisputable consideration in the public concept and therefore that this group is worthy of such honor," he added when explaining the agreement to initiate this process, which will be instructed from the Department of Festivities delegated to Estefanía Luzardo.
