This Sunday, November 6, Juana Manrique Cabrera, the younger sister of the artist César Manrique, passed away at the age of 95. She was the last surviving sister of César, since Amparo, the artist's twin sister, passed away in 2018 and Carlos in January of this year.

Juana Manrique was the widow of Alfredo Matallana, surveyor and director of the Fishing School of Lanzarote. Juana was a vital woman, passionate about carnival, and together with her husband and friends, she was a regular at both the El Almacén and Casino parties.

In an interview with La Provincia, she said that a month before the carnival she would sit down to sew with her friends to have everything ready and "dress up for three or four days in a row. We prepared at home and had a lot of fun." She hasn't gone out "in good condition" for two decades. I'm not 15 years old anymore," she jokes. Juana was also in charge of dressing her husband. "At first he said no, but I would put the folded costume near an armchair and when he got home, I would say, 'get dressed, we're leaving."

The Batucada Villa Pipol paid tribute to her in 2011 Juana Manrique Cabrera "for her carnival spirit", recognizing "her varied and original costumes" at the carnival party.
