The team from 4th year of ESO from IES Las Maretas in Arrecife, formed by Patricia Déniz, Oscar Martín, Karima Abdenabaoui, Ione Rodríguez and Razvan Stanciv, has been proclaimed winner of the insular phase of the III Regional School Debate Contest that was held this Friday morning in the Plenary Hall of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
In this way, IES Las Maretas will represent the island of Lanzarote in the final of this contest that will take place on March 21st in the Parliament of the Canary Islands. The initiative, promoted by the Parliament itself in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Education Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, led by Carmen Rosa Márquez, aims to put into practice the activities of collective learning, focused on the development of tools that improve the skills of oratory, exposition and analysis of students.
The debate, starring five teams from the IES César Manrique, Las Maretas, Tinajo and Las Salinas, which participated with two teams, was moderated by the vice president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ángel Vázquez and revolved around the consequences of living in a global world, as well as the opportunities or threats that this generates to society.
The students from the different teams presented their arguments for and against globalization, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages for today's youth of living in the "global village". Thus, the students addressed aspects as important as the free trade of goods and services worldwide; the reduction of production costs; technological development, international cooperation or greater accessibility to exchange and access information, thanks to globalization.
However, the arguments about the disadvantages prevailed over the rest. In fact, the participants stated that one of the consequences of the global world is the serious inequality between rich and poor countries, which generates a great economic imbalance, with hunger, poverty and wars. The depletion of natural resources and raw materials in production processes, as well as pollution, were other arguments provided by the students.
The intense debate demonstrated the skills of the participants, as well as their high capacities of oratory, exposition and analysis. For its part, the jury, chaired by the insular director of Education, Mario Pérez and formed by councilors of the Cabildo, had a very difficult task due to the high level of the participating teams and the very equal scores they obtained.
This insular phase of the III Regional School Debate Contest, which was attended by teachers and relatives of the participating teams, concluded with the delivery of commemorative diplomas for all, as well as diplomas to the students of the 4th year of ESO team of IES Las Maretas that accredited them as the winning team.
From the Cabildo of Lanzarote they wanted to publicly congratulate both the students and the teachers who have participated in this insular phase of the contest and, especially, the winning team, while wishing them the best of luck for the final where all the islands of the Archipelago will be represented.
