IES Haría, with the collaboration of the former History teacher of the Institute, José Manuel Perdomo, organized a talk-colloquium on "The Origins of the Transformation of Lanzarote" by the author of the book "The Volcano of Tourism", Juan Cruz Sepúlveda.

High school and 4th year ESO students from IES Haría watched a short documentary and a presentation about the origins of the beginning of tourist activity in Lanzarote and the strong social and economic transformation of the island that began in the sixties.

The students were chronologically discovering all the details of the configuration of the best natural spaces of Lanzarote in tourist spaces. Of particular interest were the centers located in the municipality: La Cueva de los Verdes, Los Jameos del Agua, El Mirador del Río and El Mirador de Malpaso, these spaces together with the unique landscape of the Haría Valley turned the obligatory "North Route" into one of the biggest attractions for the first visitors.

The speaker insisted on pointing out that "the Lanzarote model in its origins is unique, exclusive and paradigmatic. The island first prepared to solve the bottlenecks of tourism exploitation, such as the problem of water, and then transformed the best natural spaces into spaces for leisure and tourism. The outstanding ingenuity of the farmers as the true creators of the unique landscape of Lanzarote and the timely appearance of the artist Cesar Manrique also influenced".

The activity ended with a broad debate between students and teachers about overcrowding, unemployment, new professions, landscape deterioration, the color chart, advertising posters and closed with a question for reflection: "Is the Biosphere Reserve an award or a commitment"?
