The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, recently performed, for the first time, surgery with a bone graft to treat the loosening of a hip prosthesis with severe bone loss.
The highly complex intervention was performed by a team of specialists in Traumatology and Orthopedics led by Dr. Yolanda Rodríguez with the aim of restoring mobility and improving the patient's quality of life, a 47-year-old woman who is recovering favorably.
The intervention for bone grafting or transplantation, a product of cadaveric donation, seeks to promote the mobility of patients who suffer from a severe bone deficit and improve their quality of life.
It should be noted that bone is the tissue that is most used as a graft. The allograft replaces part of the bone and provides a solution that guarantees the recovery of mobility. Although this type of intervention is not common in small hospitals, the Lanzarote center has successfully performed this first bone graft.
For the head of the Traumatology service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, Irene Jiménez, "this intervention is performed because we have the necessary human and material resources to carry it out and opens the doors to being able to take on cases of these characteristics."
