Dr. Abelardo Cervera Pérez, head of Internal Medicine at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, assumed the presidency of Rotary Club Lanzarote during an event that took place this past weekend. Cervera Pérez took over from the previous president of the Rotary Club of Lanzarote, the German businessman and resident of Lanzarote, Wolfgang Heigl, who is credited with the creation and presence of Rotary in Lanzarote when it was founded in 1991.

Each year, as July arrives, Rotary clubs appoint their new board of directors and the new president takes office, a position he will hold until June 30 of the following year.

Alongside Abelardo Cervera, who is also president of the Canary Society of Internal Medicine, Alfredo Pérez, Bancaja's director for the southern area of Lanzarote, will serve as the new secretary of Rotary Club Lanzarote. As mace-bearer, the former president of the Lanzarote Confederation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (Felapyme) and current councilor in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Eugenio Hernández. The treasurer will be the well-known businessman from Lanzarote, Marcial Pérez de León.

The board of directors also includes the businessmen Marcial Cabrera Lemes, Ventura Acuña, the former Iberia executive in Lanzarote, Otilia Aguilar Topham, the dentist [Oscar->http://oscars-awards.com] Pacheco, and the journalist Severino A. Betancort. The new board of directors of RC Lanzarote for the Rotary year 2009/10 took office during a gala dinner that took place this Saturday at the Arrecife Gran Hotel.

Rotary is an international organization of professionals and entrepreneurs that provides humanitarian aid and promotes solidarity initiatives, present in more than 200 countries with some 32,000 clubs. The Rotary Club Lanzarote is made up of about 40 prominent professionals and entrepreneurs from Lanzarote society.

Support initiatives

Since its creation on the Island, they have stood out for their support initiatives for Adislan, AFACODA, El Cribo, Cruz Roja, Calor y café, and the equipment of the soup kitchens of Sor Ana. Also, recently a young resident of Arrecife has obtained her law degree with a scholarship from the Rotarians of Lanzarote for the amount of 15,000 euros.

About one hundred people participated in the event, which was attended by authorities from the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and the Arrecife City Council, as well as Rotarians from Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and the island of volcanoes. Among the authorities present at the event were the senator for the Canary Community, Loli Luzardo; the councilor for Social Affairs and Health of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Joaquín Caraballo, as well as the councilors of the First Institution María José Docal and Eugenio Hernández, who are also members of the Rotary Club of Lanzarote. The Arrecife City Council was represented by the councilor for Tourism, Commerce, and Works, Alberto Morales, and the councilwoman Luisa Blanco.
