The University of Santiago and the César Manrique Foundation have signed an advisory contract for the realization of "an exhaustive investigation" in order to determine the social, economic and energy impacts of wind development (terrestrial and marine) on the island of Lanzarote.
According to the academic institution, USC professor Rosa Mª Regueiro Ferreira, researcher at IDEGA and the research group on Bioeconomics, Ecological Economics and Natural Resources of the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences, will be in charge of directing the research team, which will be made up of university staff and independent professionals with recognized experience in the sector.
In addition, contributions will be incorporated from all agents involved in wind development and from entities such as the CSIC, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, among others.
The roadmap for offshore wind power in Spain considers the construction of offshore wind farms in five demarcations, one of which is the Canary Islands, while onshore wind farms are located in different enclaves of the archipelago.
"In this sense, and given the corporate purpose of the César Manrique Foundation, knowledge of the global impact of these actions is fundamental for the sustainable and ecological future of the island of Lanzarote in particular," Regueira points out regarding the agreement.
