The Union of Civil Guards (UniónGC) has stated that the holidays of former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in Lanzarote "mortgage" the security of the island due to the limited resources available.

This was indicated by the organization in a statement in which it recalls that this type of politician requires 24-hour protection, in addition to the personal escort to which he is entitled by reason of his former position.

At the same time, UniónGC pointed out that summer is not only high season for the hotel industry, but that the influx of tourists and the increase in patron saint festivities also make it "high season" for the State security forces.

A seasonal increase in work that "is sometimes increased by the protection of the holiday destinations of the authorities".

In this regard, he observed that Zapatero, who is resting in Lanzarote, decided on September 4 to extend his stay on the island, which led to the civil guards stationed at the Costa Teguise Post, with the support of the Tías Main Post, having to provide permanent protection until the scheduled end date of his stay.

"The coincidence of the politician's stay with the main festivals of Lanzarote, those of Los Dolores, forces Civil Guard posts away from the Famara area to reinforce the citizen security of Teguise and Haría with the limited resources available during the summer season," the organization said.

For this reason, he stressed that units that can barely send out a patrol per shift to serve the citizens of their districts, must dedicate it to protecting an authority, causing that, in many of the shifts, municipalities such as Teguise, Haría, San Bartolomé or Tinajo are served by a single patrol.
