The plan that aims to control and eradicate the diocalandra frumenti in Lanzarote is progressing in the training of professionals. In this case, the Civic Center of Playa Honda hosted this Wednesday an instruction day that included personnel from San Bartolomé, Tías and Tinajo linked to working with palm trees.

The project is promoted by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Mariano H. Zapata, and the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the Environment area directed by Samuel Martín. The actions, carried out by the public company Gestión del Medio Rural (GMR), will continue with the celebration of new conferences in the coming weeks, for which personnel from other municipalities on the island will be counted on.

In this training, the staff was able to acquire a greater knowledge about the techniques that, according to current legislation, must be carried out for the correct management of work with palm trees. In addition, they were given various informative publications on this matter.

Mariano H. Zapata, Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, explained that these courses are "fundamental" so that professionals know "how to tackle the problem" and can, as soon as possible, "end the plague that is destroying the most important plant symbol of the island".

The Diocalandra frumenti Control and Eradication Plan in Lanzarote aims to increase the areas free of plague on the island, as well as the establishment of phytosanitary measures to prevent re-infection from the most affected areas.

Along with the training activities, the plan includes different actions including mass capture work of diocalandra frumenti, through pheromone traps, phytosanitary treatment to affected palm trees, sanitation work and pruning and/or removal of palm trees severely affected by the plague.

In addition, a geographic information system (Distribution Maps) will be implemented on the actions carried out. In addition, a dissemination and awareness campaign will be launched that will include, among other actions, informative and awareness talks.

The project has a website (www.palmeraslanzarote.com) and social networks (Facebook: Palmeras Lanzarote / Instagram: Palmeraslanzarote), through which all the information about the Control and Eradication Plan of the Diocalandra frumenti in the palm trees of Lanzarote will be brought to the citizens.
