The Atlantic Society of Oceanographers has decided to award the Oceans Award in its 2025 edition to four groups or entities of the archipelago, highlighting the value of their projects related to the sea and the aquatic environment in the fields of dissemination, science, education, sustainability and environmental conservation.
In the education category: the ZEConsciente Project for its original approach to guarantee the conservation and sustainability of the Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) marines. A pioneering project in the archipelago that has placed the Tías City Council as a benchmark in the environmental care of the waters of Lanzarote, for its informative, awareness-raising and promotion of citizen participation.
In the individual category: María Soledad Izquierdo López, for her scientific and informative work on marine ecosystems. A prominent researcher recognized for her career in sustainable aquaculture studies and for her tireless work in the search for food sovereignty.
In the collective-NGO category: the Association 'Canarias 1500 Km de Costa', for its continuous work in the prevention of accidents on the Canarian coast. Through dissemination, training and awareness, they have established strategies and action protocols for the sustainable development of coastal users in terms of their safety.
In the company-institution category: the Department of Education and Youth of the Island Council of Gran Canaria for its commitment to an education that includes respect and knowledge of the sea. Thanks to its educational and youth participation programs, the message of marine sustainability and conservation reaches more and more students and families.
