Lanzarote recorded eight deaths from aquatic accidents in 2023

According to the data collected in the VIII Map of Aquatic Accidents of the Canary Islands 2023 presented this Tuesday, Lanzarote recorded 23 victims of aquatic accidents in 2023. Among the people affected, there were 8 deaths, 11 injured of various considerations and 4 rescues, in 16 of the beaches and coastal points of 7 municipalities of the island. In addition, the island of La Graciosa recorded only one rescue during the entire past year.

This statistical study, prepared for the eighth consecutive year, revealed that a total of 136 beaches, coastal points and swimming pools (to a lesser extent) located in 44 of the 88 municipalities of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, recorded 253 aquatic accidents, with a total of 71 deaths, as well as six injured in critical condition, thirty-three serious, (41) moderate, (20) mild and (82) rescued unharmed during 2023. In 36 Canarian municipalities, at least one death occurred in the aquatic environment last year.

This mortality figure represents a decrease of 4% compared to the balance of 2022 (74). On the other hand, the number of total affected increases with figures of 253, with 45 more people compared to January to December of the same year (208).
