The Government of the Canary Islands will receive "2.9 million euros" from the Ministry of Health to expand the portfolio of oral health services in the Canary Islands.

In Lanzarote, the Health Services Management will have three new chairs with which it has reinforced dental care consultations with the incorporation of new materials and furniture. In addition, work has been carried out to renovate the facilities to improve the spaces in which dental care is provided, such as the work on the facilities of the Oral Health Unit of Lanzarote, in the Valterra Health Center.

The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, participated this Friday, June 28, in the meeting of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (SNS) in Madrid, in which the distribution of funds for the financing of the Plan for the expansion of the common portfolio of oral health services in the SNS was approved and in which the Canary Islands will receive a sum of "2,926,494 euros".

The objective of PADICAN is to guarantee "dental care to all children and young people protected by the Canarian health system", aged between six and fourteen years old (both ages included).

With these funds, the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Assistance Programs of the Canarian Health Service (SCS), will complete the hiring of a total of 41 new professionals to cope with the expansion of the portfolio of services in oral health.

Expansion of the service portfolio

The expansion of the SNS oral health service portfolio incorporates the following public dental services and preventive measures:

  • The child-youth population and people over fourteen years of age with intellectual disabilities or with a disability limiting the mobility of the upper limbs include, among other services, periodic check-ups, preventive treatments such as tartar removal, application of remineralizing, antiseptic and desensitizing substances, sealing of pits and fissures and restorative actions. In the case of people with severe behavioral disorders who are not able to maintain the necessary self-control to allow adequate attention to their oral health, the provision of services will be guaranteed through adequate sedative or general anesthesia treatment.
  • For pregnant women and people diagnosed with oncological processes in the cervicofacial area, clinical examination is contemplated, as well as, when indicated, tartar removal and application of remineralizing, antiseptic or desensitizing substances.
  • The general population will be offered information and recommendations on basic hygienic and dietary measures necessary to achieve and maintain oral health, treatments for acute dental and pharmacological processes, extractions, surgical extractions and minor surgery of the oral cavity, early detection of premalignant lesions and, where appropriate, biopsy of mucosal lesions, among other services.
