A group of residents of Famara has once again warned about the situation in the town, denouncing the "laxity, omission and inefficiency on the part of the Teguise City Council and the Lanzarote Cabildo in the maintenance, cleaning and surveillance" of this natural space.
In a letter, which they sign as the Waste Working Group of the Local Council of the Biosphere Reserve, they list several situations with which the residents have to live daily and criticize "the apathy of silence on the part of the relevant administrators", with whom they have "tried to have a meeting, without having succeeded to date".
Situations to change
The residents demand the installation of free public bathrooms, because "the bushes on the beaches of Famara and San Juan are doing this service". They criticize that "the area is filled with papers and feces that create sources of unsanitary conditions, apart from the pollution and the negative visual effect that this causes".
"The situation of the town with respect to garbage collection is one of the most notorious and delicate problems. The health of the residents of the town of Caleta de Famara is at stake," they add.
In addition, they explain that the problem with waste does not only come from the mainland. "The sea carries all kinds of waste, both micro and macroplastics, which due to the currents reach our coasts and which altruistic and voluntary people collect almost daily," they emphasize. "This situation is not new for either the City Council or the Cabildo because they have already been denounced and exposed to these entities, where they apparently do not see the urgency of acting in this regard through the surveillance and control of this natural space, which is supposed to be protected and of which many people talk about its beauty," they criticize.
"Collaborate on possible solutions"
The Waste Working Group states that it has unsuccessfully tried to convey "this serious problem directly to the people who make up the Government Groups, who have the necessary powers to change this type of situation". Among the proposals they have tried to present is the "door to door", which consists of "a system of selective garbage collection"; of which they comment that "it has been carried out in other countries for years" and that "its effectiveness has been demonstrated".
"We want to draw the attention of the competent entities, so that they take into account the opinion of the residents and that together we can collaborate on possible solutions," they conclude.
