Police officers attached to the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (U.D.E.V.) of the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police of Las Palmas, have recently proceeded to the arrest of three people as alleged perpetrators of a jewelry theft valued at 80,000 euros.
In mid-August of last year, a foreign citizen filed a complaint stating the theft of a bag from inside the room he occupied in a central hotel in the capital, which contained jewelry whose approximate value, at first, was about 70,000 euros.
The investigation, framed in the device called "Operation Buttons" and which has lasted about six months, was hampered from the beginning by the lack of witnesses, the "modus operandi" that suggested that they were professionals and also because the ocular inspection carried out resulted in the absolute lack of traces or clues.
However, the officials of this unit found out that the jewels had been circulating for sale through a "perista" in the area of Parque de Santa Catalina, so various surveillance devices were carried out for their location and detention.
A few weeks later, officials of the Prevention and Reaction Unit (U.P.R.) arrested a first person, Artemi G. C., 27 years old, native of Las Palmas and with six previous arrests, who had in his possession a ring with 36 diamonds, proceeding to its intervention. The UDEV agents contacted the complainant in his country of residence and he photographically recognized the ring as his property, valuing it at more than 5,900 euros.
At the end of September, the agents detected three operations of buying and selling jewelry made in several establishments of the capital, suspecting that they could be the jewels object of the investigation, so they proceeded to intervene the different lots that added up to a total of 15 jewels, of which photos were sent again to the complainant, who recognized without any doubt all as his property, making a new valuation of the same up to a total of 80,000 euros.
At the same time, the steps continued to find out the identity of the person who had carried out the commercial transactions, managing to identify Marianela C. B., 28 years old, native of Las Palmas, with 2 arrests, who was arrested in mid-December, after spending two months of vacation in Italy.
Likewise, it was possible to find out the existence of two other people who had intervened in the events, one of them of Arab origin and who was the one who had sold part of the jewels to Marianela and another part to an Argentine citizen of whom the full identification has not been obtained, although it is waiting for it to proceed with his arrest.
The third individual turned out to be Cheb R., 44 years old, Lebanese, who used up to 25 different identities and who has more than 50 arrests for very diverse crimes that was located and arrested by officials attached to the North District Police Station of the capital.
Together with the proceedings instructed, the three detainees were placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority, leaving the jewels as a deposit to be delivered to their owner.
