Playa Chica reopened for swimming this Monday after the collapse of a marine platform last Sunday forced the closure of access. This was confirmed by the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, during an interview on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero.
"It is already working normally," the mayor revealed. This Sunday, "the red flag was placed as a precaution, but we verified that there was nothing dangerous," Cruz added. The concern of the council when noticing the incident was that "some stone would come off" and that the area would "remain at risk of danger," he pointed out.
Closed last Sunday
As La Voz reported on Monday, the beach had to be closed to swimming this Sunday after the collapse, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., when the divers who were working in the area gave the warning.
As Emerlan specified to La Voz, the marine platform "sank about 15 meters", an event for which they proceeded to "mark the area" and thus avoid access to the rocks, pointed out the deputy director of Emerlan, Ginés Cedrés. In addition, this Monday, Emerlan and Boluntis divers approached the place to dive again and find out the state of the detached platform.
The divers have acted in the area
Last Sunday around 4:40 p.m. they received a notice from the Local Police of Tías that some divers in the area of the Chico Pier of Playa Chica spotted how a large slope of sand and stones “collapsed”. Immediately afterwards, they mobilized the personnel of the Underwater Unit to carry out an inspection and some recordings of the place together with Emerlan, the emergency teams have specified.
In addition, the Civil Protection personnel of Tías together with the Police officers and under the direction of the Municipal Emergency Coordinator in Tías proceeded to close the beach and the pier to all activity until the true state of the collapse was known.
After an inspection, they detected that what happened was a "movement of earth", which did not affect the foundation of the rocky area or the pier. For this reason, it was decided to reopen the beach and the activity. The town hall is also working to find out the current situation in the area.
