A new incident on the runways of the Canary Islands airports has once again drawn attention to the safety of air operations in the archipelago.

Cameras from the specialized channel Lanzarote Webcam have recorded a maneuver that occurred this past Thursday at Fuerteventura Airport, where two aircraft came face-to-face on the same active runway.

The episode took place when the easyJet flight EZY810DW, operated by an Airbus A319 with registration G-EZDV and bound for London Luton Airport, was aligned at the head of runway 01, about to begin its takeoff roll. At that moment, a light aircraft landed on the same runway using the opposite direction.

As reflected in the images disseminated on social media, the crew of the commercial aircraft waited stopped at the head of the runway while the small plane completed its head-on landing and cleared the tarmac via taxiway and exit E8.

Second incident on Canary Islands runways in just one month

This incident at the Fuerteventura aerodrome occurs a few weeks after another episode at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, also recorded by Lanzarote Webcam and first reported by La Voz de Lanzarote.

At the end of September, an Iberia Express plane bound for Madrid entered runway 03 via exit E1 just as a Ryanair flight from Dublin was still in the process of landing, forcing the arriving aircraft to brake in time and aborting the approach of the next traffic in the air.

That incident prompted the immediate opening of a formal investigation by the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), while the Air Traffic Controllers' association publicly denounced through their networks the complex operations of the islands' aerodromes and the deficient working conditions and staffing levels with which they work daily. The images of this new incident in Fuerteventura once again focus attention on the coordination and operational saturation of air traffic in the Canary Islands.
