An inmate of the Tahíche penitentiary center has been found dead in his cell on Thursday morning, according to the trade union section of ACAIP (Association of Bodies of the Administration of Penitentiary Institutions).

The events took place in module number 4 of the prison, where he was alone in a cell. "At approximately 12 in the morning, the on-duty official requires the inmate through the intercom that communicates with the cell, as he was on medical leave," explains the union.

Upon receiving no response, the worker went there and found the man "lying on the bed and surrounded by a pool of blood, with a lid from a can of preserves nearby, with which he presumably injured himself."

After notifying the center's medical services and 112, the inmate was transferred to the nursing department, where they could do nothing to save his life.
