A person had to be assisted this Sunday on Famara beach after getting into trouble at sea, according to the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium. The alert was received at 1:51 PM via CECOES 1-1-2, which activated resources from La Graciosa and the Central Park, in addition to the M-21 vehicle.
Upon the arrival of the teams, the lifeguard reported that the person had exited the water under their own power, so no medical assistance was necessary. The Local Police of Teguise also intervened at the scene.
A week after two bathers died
The incident occurs a week after the death of two bathers on the same beach — a 37-year-old Romanian man and another 28-year-old young man of Indian nationality — which has reawakened criticism over the lack of safety on the sandy area.
In fact, an emergency room nurse who participated in the resuscitation attempt of one of the deceased recently denounced "serious deficiencies" at the Famara lifeguard station, pointing out the absence of a complete first-aid kit and adequate facilities to respond to emergencies.
Neighbors and bathers insist that Famara beach, although very frequented, can be a dangerous environment depending on sea conditions, and they demand more resources and surveillance personnel before tragedies are repeated.
