An unprecedented drama on the island

The lifeless body of a girl of only eight years old began to give dimension this Sunday of the enormous tragedy that had docked on the coasts of Lanzarote. However, as the hours passed, the human drama has been growing, leaving the most serious event lived on the island with illegal immigration.

Until 7:00 p.m. this Monday, 21 bodies had already been rescued, and most of them correspond to minors. In total, three young children and about fifteen young teenagers between 16 and 19 years old. Although their exact age is not yet known, and much less their names, because the bodies had not been identified. To the tragic figures are also added two deceased women, one of them eight months pregnant.

However, the search continued. The figures handled by the security and emergency forces are based on the testimony of one of the six survivors, who said that 28 people were traveling on the boat. Therefore, if that data is correct, there would still be another immigrant to locate.

Although sources from 112 had indicated that three other bodies were sighted in the area, which would be added to the 21 already rescued, the Security and Emergency Consortium and the Red Cross deny this extreme. Both organizations state that the last two bodies that were sighted were rescued around 5:00 p.m., after tasks that were complicated by the state of the sea, which again dragged the bodies after they were seen in a rocky area.

If the last body they expect to find does not appear to complete the official figures they are handling, the intention was to suspend the device and resume it this Tuesday. Throughout Monday, in which 16 bodies have been located (which are added to the five that appeared in the first hours of the tragedy), a team made up of a hundred people has been dedicated to the search, complicated by the strong waves and the rugged terrain.

Six survivors

After the tragedy, six people managed to save their lives after being rescued a few minutes after the shipwreck by the Uruguayan Cristian Hunt, a local resident, who helped by his surfboard was taking the immigrants out one by one, including a minor and his father. The young Johnatan Camarasa, also a resident of the area, helped to get one of those affected out of the sea. In addition, some sources pointed out that at least one member of the boat could have fled on foot after reaching the coast by swimming, although this information has not been officially confirmed.

The boat was first spotted by a local police officer from Haría who had approached the coast in his vehicle. Thus, he was able to follow the trajectory of the boat until it collided with the rocks on the coast and sank, triggering the tragedy.

Five of the survivors were transferred to the José Molina Orosa Hospital, where they remained admitted until this Monday, after recovering from the symptoms of hypothermia, dehydration and anxiety they presented. The sixth survivor, who arrived in better health and was the one who was able to provide more data about the boat from the beginning, has been at the disposal of the Civil Guard since this Sunday.

From Tan Tan

According to what they have told the emergency services, the boat had left Tan Tan, west of Morocco, in the early hours of Saturday morning. This place usually follows the routes of illegal immigration to the Peninsula and not to the Canary Islands. According to ACN Press, the expedition was made up of citizens from the north and south of Morocco, Saharawis and Mauritanians.

The accident occurred when the boat capsized, which was not detected by the Comprehensive External Surveillance Service (SIVE), despite the fact that, according to the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Carolina Darias, who was moved to the scene of the tragedy, the device was fully operational.
