A new cetacean has appeared stranded this Monday on the coast of Lanzarote, after the striped dolphin intercepted this morning in Puerto del Carmen. It is an specimen of common dolphin, according to information from the Society for the Study of Cetaceans in the Canary Archipelago (SECAC).
Around 11:00 AM, biologists from SECAC went to the scene to examine the animal, which was lifeless. Now, it will be transferred to perform the necropsy and determine the cause of death.
This stranding adds to the one that also took place this Monday in Puerto del Carmen, where a striped dolphin was found dead.
The common dolphin mainly inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This cetacean has a slender and stylized body, in addition to having a short and slender snout. It has a dark gray back, the ventral area white and with an anterior yellowish part. Adults measure between 1.6 and 2.7 meters and weigh up to 200 kilos, depending on the region.
