The year of the burned cars in Arrecife. The year of the vehicles in flames. 2009 witnessed the burning of 37 cars, according to data from the Local Police in the capital city. According to these statistics, from January to May, 20 vehicles were burned in Arrecife, while from June to December, 17 were recorded.
It should be noted that not all of these fires were caused in the cars, although "many of them were", according to the agents. The police explain that on several occasions the flames occurred in containers and from there spread to the cars that were parked nearby. Although on some occasions these containers burn accidentally, in most cases the fires were caused.
The wave of burned vehicles in Arrecife began on January 10, 2009, when two cars were completely burned and another four were affected. These fires occurred almost simultaneously and in the early morning. A month later, several cars were engulfed in flames on Tofio Street in the capital. The neighbors, at that time, suspected that there could be an arsonist in the area. On this occasion, no one was arrested either.
Months later, in May 2009, a fire was also recorded in Simón de Bolívar Square at around one in the morning. According to fire department sources, the flames affected one vehicle in its entirety and a second partially. And so, up to 37 vehicles, which were engulfed in flames during the past year. In this way, 2009 became the year of the burned cars.
