The Timple House-Museum, in Teguise, hosted one of those evenings last Friday that remain etched in collective memory. The stage was filled with emotion and artistic excellence with the show "El Toñin Corujo Quartet," led by Toñin Corujo, one of the most renowned composers and performers on the Canarian scene.
The concert was a journey through the landscapes, people, and memory of Lanzarote. Corujo's compositions evoked essential figures such as César Manrique, Jesús Soto, or Leandro Perdomo, and traversed symbolic places like Famara, Mancha Blanca, or the Soo Desert, as well as ancestral elements like gofio, to which the musician has dedicated one of his most celebrated pieces.
A Quartet of Excellence
For this very special occasion, the quartet brought together a first-class artistic cast: Toñín Corujo, Timple, Carlos Pérez, Saxophone, Tony Cantero, Guitar, Néstor Castro Corujo, multi-instrumentalist
The group presented new works inspired by the seafaring folklore of Arrecife, compositions conceived from the exhibition "Sailing in Memory. Collection of Ship Models by Marcial Cabrera Reyes". With this proposal, "El Toñin Corujo Quartet" built a bridge between Lanzarote's maritime memory and the group's contemporary sound language, thus reaffirming Corujo's essence: music that unites identity, modernity, and tradition to continue.
During the evening, the audience enjoyed a selection of unreleased pieces such as: El Almacén, Mirador del Río, Desierto de Soo, Gofio, Litoral, Palabras para María, or Querida Lola, among others.
Highlights of a memorable night
The concert achieved extraordinary musical quality thanks to the commitment and dedication of the performers. Saxophonist Carlo Pérez shone with a spectacular performance, while Tony Cantero supported each piece with a masterful guitar that brought warmth and firmness to the ensemble.
Toñin Corujo, always approachable and humble, once again won over the audience with his mastery. Each performance revealed his enormous creative capacity and his deep connection to Canarian music. But one of the most surprising moments of the night came with the participation of the very young Néstor Castro Corujo, a student of Toñin. His versatility left the audience speechless; during the concert, he moved naturally between the piano, accordion, bass, and flamenco cajón, demonstrating that there is no instrument that resists him. His appearance on stage confirmed that we are witnessing an emerging promise of island music, supported at all times by his teacher and his quartet companions
A crowd-pleasing finale
To the audience's enthusiasm, as they resisted letting them go, the quartet returned to the stage once again to offer an encore that was doubly applauded. The Councilor for Culture and Festivals of the Teguise City Council, Andoni Machín Barrera, presented Toñin Corujo with the concert poster as a memento of the evening.
Benito Cabrera, commissioner of the Timple House-Museum, was also present, congratulating the musicians on their success and encouraging them to continue taking Lanzarote's music to stages around the world.
