The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) organizes a meeting with Soledad Gallego-Díaz, former director of the newspaper "El País", led by journalists Techy Acosta and Saúl García. The event, entitled "Journalism today on the dissection table", will take place on Thursday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m., in the José Saramago room of the FCM (La Plazuela, Arrecife).

The session will address both "the present and the future of the media, starting with the evolution they have undergone to determine the current characteristics of the media landscape", the foundation reports. Likewise, issues such as "the relationships between information and communication, the tensions between power (political and business) and the press, the new journalistic business models, the loss of influence of the major media or the increasing fragmentation of audiences, and therefore the ease of polarizing public opinion" will be examined, it adds.

Regarding the challenges of the future, the focus will be on "the digital age with the emergence of new platforms and the consolidation of social networks and in widespread phenomena such as the so-called post-truth or over-information, without neglecting the immediacy demanded by new technologies and the tyranny of the click versus the need for analysis, research, rigor and conventional contrast", it confirms.

Soledad Gallego-Díaz is a journalist, has a long and extensive career and is considered one of the great figures of reference in journalism in our country. She began working at "El País" in 1976 as a collaborator specializing in political information, combining her work in "Cuadernos para el Diálogo", until she fully joined the political section of the newspaper. At the end of 1979, she took over the "El País" correspondent in Brussels. Her experience in the field of international information was completed during that decade with two other correspondents, in London and Paris. Back in the central editorial office, she was appointed deputy director and then deputy director of the newspaper. Later she served as correspondent in New York and Buenos Aires, before returning to the position of deputy director. From June 2018 to July 2020 she was director of the newspaper "El País".

Saúl García is a journalist specializing in written press. He has published in local, regional and national media. He currently works at "Diario de Lanzarote", where he has also been writing an opinion blog for ten years: "elpaseo". He is a collaborator of the César Manrique Foundation, editor of the magazine "Tahíche Opina" —made with inmates of the penitentiary center—, and author of the book "Pepín Ramírez: The man who turned Manrique into César".

Techy Acosta is a journalist specializing in local information with more than thirty years of experience in the Canary Islands and the Basque Country. She currently directs "La Voz de Lanzarote" —Clabe award for the best local media— and Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero —Gold Medal of the Canary Islands—. Since 2006 she has collaborated as a panelist in political information programs both on Radio Televisión Canaria (RTVC) and on Radio Televisión Española (RTVE).
