The Cabildo of Lanzarote agreed in a plenary commission to appoint the folklorist Ico Arrocha as Favorite Son, one of the most relevant voices of Canarian music and one of the great singers of the Archipelago. The proposal, which started almost a year ago by the Minister of Culture, Alberto Aguiar, was approved unanimously by all the political groups with representation in the Island Corporation.

“The island of Lanzarote does justice to one of the most outstanding figures in Canarian folklore and our popular culture”, says the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, who highlights Ico Arrocha's “masterful voice, his innate talent and his ability to excite an entire town with his interpretations.”

The Island Corporation points out that both the posthumous recognition plenary session and the institutional act of naming Favorite Son will be held later, given the current health restrictions and capacity limitations in closed spaces.

“The appointment of Favorite Son deserves to be celebrated with the utmost solemnity and I am sure that the recognition of Ico Arrocha will summon the world of popular culture that will want to accompany the family of our folklorist in that act,” added the president.

Ico Arrocha, who died in May 2016, belonged to the Guadarfía de San Bartolomé Folkloric Group, with which he recorded several albums and participated in meetings, festivals and television programs such as Tenderete, from TVE in the Canary Islands, and La Bodega de Julián, from Canarian Television.
