Teguise Carnival Groups Presentation

With the permitted capacity of the Teguise Municipal Tent complete and with a very lively audience eager to party, the presentation of the carnival groups that will participate representing the municipality this year took place on this Sunday afternoon.

Olivia Duque, mayoress of the Teguise City Council, was in charge of welcoming the event, congratulating each of the participating groups for "the work they have been doing for several months, dedicating many hours and giving everything to leave the municipality very high" and of which she said, "she feels very proud, encouraging them to continue", at the same time that she encouraged the numerous public present to "participate in the events programmed for the carnival in the municipality".

The first to be presented were Los Diabletes de Teguise, of which there are several theories about their possible origin. One of them points to ritual dances of the ancient, totally pagan Mahos. At present, Los Diabletes wear white trousers and shirts with red and black diamonds, adorned with leather straps and bells, and carry sticks with bags to scare the public.

The Batucada Merekumbé created in 2011 from the heart and friendship of a group of friends from the town of Muñique, united by the love of rhythm and celebration, although its history is not written in books or engraved in stone, but in the laughter, rehearsals and drums that resonate every time they come together. They are an association that lives for and for the Carnival, a magical festival where the world is filled with color, music and joy.

This year they have been inspired by Mexican shamans, guardians of ancestral traditions, with their altars full of life, death and mysticism, under the direction of Jacobo Cáceres, who presented the theme Santerumbé Camánico.

On the other hand, the Comparsa Los Cumbacheros from Tahíche also made an appearance, created in 2012 with a total of 61 members. Its director and choreographer is Sergio Níz and its musical director Gesury García. For his part, the designer is Borja Abreu, who presented the fantasy Aqua from the depths of the Atlantic.

Participation also Ritmo y Armonía, a troupe from Lanzarote to participate in the rhythm and harmony troupe contest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife as guests, participating since 2015 and bringing their essence, rhythm and color to the grand final of the Chicharrero carnival every year. Also the Batucada Menuda Caña from the town of Tahíche, directed by Miguel Gallego and presided over by Juan Gallego. They wore the fantasy Night of the Rising Sun. Menuda Caña is celebrating its 25th anniversary with 30 members and it should be noted that all its instruments are laminated with designs from the work of César Manrique.

This year Aday Betancort (Drag Eros) was also present, very excited because this year and after seven years without stepping on that stage he returns to participate in the Drag Gala of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria representing Lanzarote. As guests in this presentation, the students of the Daniel de la Rosa School performed with a selection of urban dances, with impressive choreographies that the public rewarded with their applause.

With the presentation of trophies to the participating groups and the family photo, the final touch was put to a night where rhythm and color put the carnival note in the Teguise tent.
