Arrecife Culture has started the restoration of the statue of the remembered 'Pollo de Arrecife', located for seven years in the emblematic and pedestrian street León y Castillo, better known as 'Calle Real'.
The Councilor for Culture, Abigail González, highlights that Heraclio Niz Mesa "was, still is and will always be one of the most endearing and charismatic characters of this City, and that is why Arrecife proudly displays this masterful figure of him made by Rigoberto Camacho", who is carrying out the restoration.
In this sense, González points out "the need for a society to keep alive the memory of its historical references, such as the 'Pollo de Arrecife', one of the most outstanding fighters that Lanzarote has given in the noble native sport of Canarian Wrestling".
Municipal guard
After leaving the arenas, where he starred in memorable fights in the middle of the last century, Heraclio Niz Mesa, a native of the town of Máguez and who died in 2010 at the age of 80, served as a municipal guard of Arrecife, eventually being appointed head of the Local Police.
Always distinguished by his kindness and sympathy, he participated in numerous films shot in Lanzarote, including 'One Million Years B.C.', starring the famous Raquel Welch. He also received several outstanding recognitions such as the Medal of Tourist Merit, for acting as an endearing host to those who visited Arrecife.
